The Stygian Abyss was the bottomless void underneath the world. It encompassed Tempest, the Plane of Infinite Chaos. At the deepest threshold of the Abyss the goddess Moriddigan was said to wait on her charnel throne where she ushered the dead into the afterlife.

Inhabitants

The Abyss was understood to be hostile to most forms of conventional life. According to certain parables, immortals who escaped death through reprehensible means were sentenced to plummet endlessly through the abyss. Mythical creatures such as the Worms-that-Walk, the Headless and the Shadow-Eaters erected their oblique citadels around the walls of the Abyss carved from slate and onyx using cyclopean designs.

The guardian of the threshold into the Abyss was Saint Eurdike, who presided over the Katabasis.
